| 📅 Friday, October 23, 2026 Weekend Edition | Fernandina Beach ☀️ 69°/63° |
Today is the nice one, sunny and 69. Saturday brings a northeast wind, island showers and a coastal flood watch, so the Taste of Amelia crawl is a raincoat event. The mainland stays mostly dry.

A Coastal Flood Watch and a Rip Current Statement are up for coastal Nassau through Monday evening. The Weather Service expects moderate to possibly major tidal flooding around the high tides this weekend, which hit the Fernandina Beach gauge about 8 Saturday morning and 8 Saturday night, and a wind advisory is likely for the coast Saturday with northeast gusts of 40 to 45. Today is dry everywhere. Saturday the island runs 72 with showers likely by afternoon and into the night; Yulee is 72 with a 28 percent chance, Callahan and Hilliard 73 and 74 and mostly dry. Sunday is more of the same, and the beach is for looking at, not swimming, all weekend.

The master plan cannot by itself restrict training flights, so ask what it can do.

If Saturday's crawl ends with a wet jacket and a northeast wind, the thing with a roof at 7:30 is on Cedar Street. Wednesday Addams has fallen for a nice boy from a strait-laced Ohio family, the two households meet for dinner, and the community theatre has been filling the house with it since Oct. 15. This is the third of four weekends, so counting this one there are two left: 7:30 tonight and Saturday, 2 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday, then Oct. 29 and 30 at 7:30 and a final 2 p.m. matinee on Halloween. The box office site lists musicals at $30 for adults and $15 for students. If you go this weekend, tell us how the house handles a Saturday-night crowd.
📍 207 Cedar St. • Fri and Sat 7:30 p.m., Sat and Sun 2 p.m.; through Oct. 31 • Box office (904) 261-6749, Wed to Fri 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 90 minutes before curtain

The 66-page draft report the county's five-member fact-finding committee released Wednesday does not recommend a ban. It recommends size classes with a zoning table saying where each kind of data center may go, standards for setbacks, screening and landscaping, measurable noise limits that cover low-frequency hum as well as ordinary sound, required reports on water and electricity use, emergency plans, and a procedure for what happens when a facility shuts down; developers would carry their own infrastructure costs. It also calls for replacing Resolution 2026-013 so that data centers get no county economic development grant or other county incentive, the same lever the county commission took up Wednesday morning, and it warns that tighter rules could draw property-rights claims under the Bert Harris Act. No universal distance from neighborhoods is proposed. The recommendations are advisory: the commission's first workshop is Monday, Oct. 26, 3 to 5 p.m. in the board chambers in Yulee, the second is Nov. 9, and written comments stay open on the county's Data Centers page until Jan. 8.
Read More → Fernandina ObserverThe News-Leader reported Thursday that city officials expect the final week of October to be when the former Brett's Waterway Cafe comes down, with contractors nearly done mobilizing on the marina site. That piece is behind the paper's paywall, so we are printing what it says and no more. The context is ours: the fencing went up at the end of September, the $12.58 million marina rebuild is the city's largest capital project ever, the restaurant closed for good on Oct. 4, 2025, after 41 years, and the marina stays open through roughly 18 months of work. One practical change already made: the Ship Store has moved to 17 S. Front St., the old boater's lounge, open to the public seven days a week, 8 to 5. If you want a last photo of the building from the waterfront, this weekend may be the time, wind and all.

Her Eighth Street shop Isola Home was damaged Feb. 10 when old cloth wiring in the attic of the Victorian caught fire; the building can be repaired, she told the Observer, but once restored it will be sold rather than reopened. Coral carries the home accessories and gifts Isola was known for, plus resort wear, shoes, swimwear and jewelry, and it keeps a complimentary bar stocked with bourbon and scotch for the spouse who is along for the ride. "I like to think of Coral not as a replacement for Isola Home, but as an evolution," Lecker said. It is a half block from Saturday's crawl check-in if the rain sends you indoors.

- Early voting runs through the weekend: all five sites, the Atlantic Recreation Center among them, are open 9 to 6 Saturday, Sunday and every day through Oct. 31, any Nassau voter at any site, photo ID with a signature.
- Monday is a three-meeting evening: the county's data center workshop at 3 in Yulee, the Wards Creek rezoning back before the county commission at 5, and the Waterfront Advisory Board's vote on the revised Waterfront Park drawing at 6 at City Hall.
- Still unreported at 7:30 this morning: Thursday's Historic District Council vote on the nine Alachua Street townhomes, and Wednesday's county commission vote on cutting data centers out of county incentives; Monday's issue carries whatever record exists.
- Florida Public Utilities' pole work starts Monday: Woodrow Drive and Island Walkway close in phases through Nov. 6 with the detour via Sadler Road, and the Simmons Road bike path closes through Dec. 11.
- Today is the last day to comment on Bosque Bello Cemetery's National Register nomination: email National_Register_Submissions@nps.gov with the subject line "Public Comment on Bosque Bello Cemetery, Nassau County, Florida - SG100013578."
Two trunk-or-treats this weekend, and Halloween itself falls on a Saturday this year. Which street or neighborhood, on the island or across the river, does Halloween best, and what makes it the one? We would like to print a map before next Saturday. Hit reply and let us know. We read every response.
The Coastal Flood Watch blames the northeast wind, but the calendar is helping it along. What is the moon doing Monday morning, and why does that matter for the water at the marina?
Answer: It is full, at 4:12 a.m. Monday by the Naval Observatory's clock. At full and new moon the sun and moon pull along the same line, so the daily tidal range stretches at both ends; sailors call them spring tides, and the word has nothing to do with the season. NOAA's predictions for the Fernandina Beach gauge climb from Saturday morning's high to a higher one each morning through Monday, and a steady northeast wind piles more water on top of whatever the moon delivers. That stacking is why the watch runs through Monday evening, and it is the same arithmetic that pushed the tides up during the Oct. 6 nor'easter as that month's new moon approached.
